Association Cup Round Two - Saturday 12th October -
Burngreave FC Reserves vs WTFC
Wombwell Town travel to Fir Vale Academy on Saturday to face new outfit Burngreave FC Reserves in the second round of the Association Cup. Both teams received a bye from round one in a competition where the Wellers reached the semi-final last season.
Burngreave FC's new Reserve side haven't had the best of starts in Division Two of the County Senior League Winning just one of their opening nine league matches. The win came away from home as they beat Thurcroft MI 5-3 back in September.
Despite scoring in all but two matches conceding goals at the other end has been a real problem and they currently have a minus 24 goal difference. Their worst result, coming early in the season, saw tomorrow's hosts lose 11-1 at South Elmsall United Services. More recently they lost 8-1 at Athersley Recreation Reserves and in their last game Thurcroft sought revenge with a 4-3 win last Saturday.
40 different players have turned out for the team so far with Mowlid Hassan the only ever present. Mahad Warsame is their current top goal scorer with five goals in seven matches, all of which came in the previous four matches.
Wombwell go into the game following their League Cup exit on Wednesday and will be looking to bounce back to winning form quickly. Midfielder Luke Needham is available again after serving his one match suspension to give manager Karl Rose another option in the line-up.
Match Report:...McDermott Scores Late Winner
In an action packed 90 minutes it was the Wellers who eventually came out on top against a Burngreave Reserve side who never gave up.
An 89th minute winner from Gareth McDermott sealed the visitor's place in the third round of the Association Cup.
The goals started to come on 13 minutes as Brad Kerr broke free on the break to round the keeper and slot the ball into the empty net.
Mahamud Hussein equalised on 29 minutes following a free-kick. The pacey left winger sped onto the ball and shot into the bottom corner, beating a diving Sam Leigh.
A cross from the left was cleared off the line for the Wellers before a scramble in the box saw Adam Jacobs bundled over, only for the penalty appeals to be waved away on 36 minutes.
In the second half, Hussein showed his pace again, apparently beating the offside trap on 64 minutes and scoring with a shot across goal.
Just one minute later Wombwell Town found an equaliser of their own with a bit of fortune thrown in for good measure.
Kerr latched onto an overhead clearance which went awry and the striker's shot on the volley squirmed under the keeper's body and into the net.
Arguably the goal of the game came on 73 minutes as Kerr completed his hat-trick in spectacular fashion.
A Luke Exley corner was headed across goal by Luke Norbury saw instincts took over as Kerr spun around, hitting the ball on the volley once again and lashing it into the top corner from the edge of the penalty box.
With five minutes to go it was Wombwell who made a defensive mistake and allowed Hussein to complete his hat trick as the game became tied a three all.
But, with extra time looming it was time for Kerr to provide the assist, and a cross-field ball to McDermott saw the striker round the keeper and put home the winner with a minute of normal time remaining.
Match Result: Burngreave FC Reserves 3-4 WTFC.
WTFC Line-Up: Leigh, Oliver, Smith, Exley, Norbury, Beaumont, Wood, Byrnes, Kerr, McDermott, Jacobs (Young, 67). Subs not used: Rose, Dudgeon.
