SHCSL Division One - Saturday 19th October - WTFC vs Sheffield Union
Wombwell Town get back to league action on Saturday as they entertain the side currently sitting bottom of the division, Sheffield Union.
A 2pm kick off will give the Wellers the opportunity to return to the top of the table on goal difference, still with a game in hand, with AFC Dronfield in cup action.
Luke Norbury (8 goals from 8 appearances) and Brad Kerr (7 from 7) will look to add to their impressive goal tally so far this season with Gareth McDermott also inform with two from his last three games.
The two sides are polar opposites in Division One at the minute with the home side hoping to stretch their unbeaten run in the league to seven and Sheffield Union yet to win after five matches.
Our visitors did draw their opening game at United Worksop, but subsequently lost the point after fielding an ineligible player.
Wombwell Town will hope to see a number of players returning to the squad after missing last weekend's win at Burngreave FC Reserves and could also give a debut to goalkeeper Lee Day.
Match Report: Westwood Winner Clinches Points
A headed goal by defender George Westwood on the hour secured the points for Wombwell Town, despite a late charge from the visitors.
The Wellers stunned Sheffield Union from kick off as a long ball forward found Gareth McDermott on the right wing and his cross found Brad Kerr who scored with 35 seconds gone.
After such a quick start the rest of the first half settled into a more genteel affair between the two sides.
It wasn't until the 51st minute when the tempo of the game picked up with Ryan Smith taking on a more advanced role down the left.
Smith broke into the box and had time to set himself for the shot which beat the keeper and went into the bottom corner.
Westwood's goal came from a McDermott corner and his powerful header beat the keeper from eight yards to make it 3-0.
Sheffield Union pulled one back on 66 minutes after a scramble in the box finally saw debutante keeper Lee Day beaten.
The last kick of the game saw Union grab a second with Day beaten down to his right as the ball found the corner of the net.
Match Result: WTFC 3-2 Sheffield Union.
