League Cup Group Stage - Game Two
Wombwell Town gave themselves a boost in their quest of progressing to the knock out stages of the League Cup with a solid draw at Dodworth MW.
The Division One side travelled to the Premier Division challengers with Connor Peace and Luke Norbury returning to the line-up to add much needed depth with Nathan Kendrick, Marl Wilson, Harley Blankley and Brad Greenfield unavailable. New youngster and goalkeeper Matthew Simpson was also named on the bench.
In previous matches against former Wellers coach Darren Young the side had been beaten twice, albeit both in friendlies, but Wombwell Town had something to prove to themselves and to others.
Having conceded so quickly against Denaby Main in the previous match it was almost a case of deja vu with Jono Davis making a save in the first minute to deny the hosts.
However, Dodworth did take the lead after four minutes though following a free-kick.
Despite blocking the initial attempt, the clearance was put back into the box for Sam Severn - who appeared twice for the Wellers during the Covid hit season last term - to strike home with a shot across goal.
The remainder of the first half was pretty even, with Chris Byrnes firing over the bar for Wombwell Town, before the equaliser came on 42 minutes.
Captain Luke Exley managed to get his head to the ball to find Connor Peace on the edge of the area.
Peace's header fell awkwardly for the Dodworth defence into the path of Lee Bennett, but the striker used his skill to take the ball away from keeper Josh Herring in a scramble on the deck and put the ball into the empty net.
With Dodworth looking to re-take the lead in the second half the job of defending was made all the more difficult for the visitors when Luke Norbury was shown a straight red card on 58 minutes for an apparent elbow.
The resulting free-kick was initially blocked by the wall and the follow-up shot saw Davis at full stretch to tip the ball onto the post in what was the best chance of the second half.
The referee had a decision to make with seven minutes to go after Bennett had his leg taken away from him following a corner and then seconds later when Bennett was pushed back to the ground in an attempt to reach the ball, but neither was seen as a foul.
Overall the point was a fair result and a win at Oughtibridge on Wednesday night would put Wombwell Town joint top of Group A with Dodworth.
