Pre-season Friendly - Saturday 3rd August - versus High Green Villa
Match Report - Wellers Wilt As They Learn Lesson
A depleted Wombwell Town side missing no fewer than nine squad members, including both keepers, fell to Premier Division side High Green Villa on a tough afternoon.
In total contrast to last Saturday's monsoon conditions the blistering heat forced the referee to call two drink breaks during the game.
The Wellers started with defender Matty Davies in goal while a trialist was preparing to take the action. The stand-in keeper did well with one fingertip save over the bar in the early stages.
The goals started to come on 22 minutes when the trialist keeper was caught by a low shot from the unmanned player after a cross came in from the right.
Six minutes later the young keeper was unlucky as he closed down the angle for a shot which hit the post and fell kindly to the teammate on the follow up.
Luke Norbury gave the Wellers a lifeline on 38 minutes when he beat the offside trap comfortably and slotted his shot past the keeper to make it 2-1.
High Green added a third just before half time as the home side beat the defence for pace.
The second half was a quieter affair to begin with before High Green Villa stretched their legs and the lead with 15 minutes to go.
Goals on 75, 76, 84 and 85 minutes will teach Wombwell Town some valuable lessons ahead of their next friendly on Thursday evening against the Premier Division Champions.
