Match Report:...Handsworth Progress in the Cup.
Two late goals for the hosts saw Wombwell Town bow out of the League Cup in the first round.
Both teams put in an even performance in the early stages of the game, but it was Wombwell who put the ball into the net first, only for Bradley Kerr's volley to be ruled out for offside by the assistant referee.
Just a minute later and the flag didn't go up against first team player Bailey Hobson who made no mistake in front of goal on 27 minutes.
Luke Norbury almost levelled on 38 minutes when Handsworth keeper James Gamble played the ball straight to the forward.
Norbury forced Gamble to save from close range and then race to collect the ball to deny a corner.
Efforts off the line for the visitors once again denied a first half equaliser before Sam Leigh was forced into a fingertip save at the other end five minutes before the break.
The Wellers piled on the pressure in the second half and finally got their reward following a 65th minutes corner.
Gareth McDermott's in-swinger was met by the head of Chris Brynes who saw a slight deflection lift the ball over Gamble for his first Wombwell Town goal.
Cramp started to play its part for the visitors who saw several players struggle going into the final 15 minutes.
Leigh denied the hosts again, from close range, on 83 minutes and was then able to clear a corner while down to nine men following treatment to two players.
On 86 minutes Wombwell were still pushing for another goal when caught in possession and substitute Sam Eccles raced clear before taking the ball wide, past Leigh, and tucking the ball into the empty net.
Another breakaway three minutes later rounded off the scoring as Ellis Moore put a third beyond Leigh as the young side pushed men forward and found plenty of space on the right of the penalty area.
The game marked the first competitive defeat away from home after 90 minutes, and will look to bounce back in the Association Cup on Saturday.
