23/24 Pre-Season Friendly - Game 1
04/07/23 - Wombwell Town vs Sheffield FC
Just 60 days after their last game in the County Senior League, Wombwell Town started pre-season for their first game in the Northern Counties East. As usual with pre-season there was a large number of players down as trialists with eleven for the home side and three for visitors Sheffield FC. With the step up coming in the league the management team of Karl Rose, Dean Cooper and Jason Dodsworth threw the squad an even bigger challenge with the Northern Premier League East side sitting two divisions higher. It may be hard to judge with both teams playing their first game of pre-season, however the Wellers equipped themselves well throughout the game and took the lead in the first half with a little luck on their side. A foul on captain Eddie Agnew lead to a free-kick 28 yards from goal and trialist E (soon to be revealed as a new signing for the club) saw his set piece deflected by the wall and gave Sheffield keeper Edd Hall no chance. Sheffield FC were also slightly fortunate to score their equalising goal on 24 minutes as a ball into the box by left back Rory Coleman was touched on by Trialist D in an attempt to take it away from Luke Mangham, however it wasn't enough and the striker passed the ball into the net. Half Time: WTFC 1, SFC 1. A completely different Wombwell Town outfield took to the pitch for the second half with Sheffield FC also making a number of changes with six substitutes at their disposal. There were fewer chances going forward for the home side, as the visitors showed more composure on the ball. On 58 minutes a ball down the right hand side saw Benni Ndlovu impeded in the box and the oldest club in the world were awarded a penalty. Coleman stepped up to take the spot kick, however keeper Jono Davis was equal to the shot and his leg save was cleared for a corner. With the heavens opening up and just eight minutes remaining a second penalty was given to Sheffield FC as the man took two steps after the initial tackle before tumbling to the ground. Mangham stepped up to take the second penalty, but was denied by Davis once more and he deflected the ball up onto the crossbar and collected the rebound. Full Time: Wombwell Town - 1 Sheffield FC - 1 Attendance: 143 Player of the Match: Jono Davis
