Wombwell Recreation Ground
Since Wombwell Town Football Club were formed in 2018 a dedicated group of officials and volunteers from the local community have worked tirelessly to restore the football side of the ground, including the clubhouse, pitches and main stand. With various funding revenues kindly helping us financially the changes are beginning to make a difference to the ground which was originally built back in 1964.
Here is a visual log of the ongoing progress at the ground (latest update - 27/05/24).

The Clubhouse (Inside): What was once a dumping ground for unused equipment, floored by rotting carpet, surrounded by smashed & barred up windows, and old lighting has now been cleared, refitted and made useable for the visitors on a matchday. Fully licenced and with more improvements on the way this main bar area now brings a warm and friendly atmosphere back to the ground and will hopefully be used for people young and old for many years to come. In December 2021 money raised through the Club Wellers membership was used to buy new chairs for the clubhouse to replace those that were 30+ years old and donated second hand ones. Towards the end of the 2021/22 season brand new photographs of players past and present were erected in the clubhouse in-between the window frames.
The Clubhouse (Outside): In the summer of 2022 new signage was added to the outside of the clubhouse.
The Main Stand: Once covered in graffiti with crumbling brickwork and covered in litter, the Main Stand has since been rebuilt, painted and tidied to make it the perfect vantage point for the match. 28 Seats were added in the summer of 2020 and in July 2022 a further 78 seats were installed into each section either side of the stand to allow supporters to sit in the main stand and watch the action unfold. With 184 seats to choose from, you can claim the best seats in the ground!
The Dugouts: Opposite the main stand there are two newly built dugouts for players and management to use on a matchday. The old foundations of previous dugouts were used as the area was unused when the club formed in 2018.
Around the Ground: A lot of overgrown trees, brushes and grassland has been cut back or removed to make the ground look used once more. Another area of improvement was fixing and replacing the lighting around the ground. The floodlights have been overhauled so evening matches can take place and lighting around the outside of the clubhouse has also been added.
Fencing Around the Ground: In the summer of 2020 the old fencing from the Station Road end of the ground was replaced. The fencing now surrounds the entire ground, making it more secure.
Food Van: The food van was sanded down and given a fresh coat of paint as well as being cleaned from top to bottom to be ready again for the Junior Tournament in Juny 2022. Signage was then added in late July in time for the 2022/23 season.
Clubhouse Extension: In 2022 work began on the extension to the clubhouse that will see brand new changing facilities, a first aid/physio room, laundry room and first floor sponsors/meeting lounge complete with viewing balcony overlooking the football pitch and go-kart track.
The photos below show the progress of the exterior build up to 17th March 2023.

Clubhouse Extension Interior: Below are some photos showing the progress of the various rooms inside the Clubhouse extension. Photos taken between March up to 5th May 2023. New update photos coming soon...
Pitch Barrier and Hard Standing: On Tuesday 19th March 2024 work began on a new pitch barrier and hard standing areas to bring supporters closer to the action. The hard standing connects to the clubhouse, main stand and wraps around 3/4 of the pitch. Once completed, supporters were able to watch the final matches of the 23/24 season closer than ever before!
Plans for the future:
There are still some key changes to the Recreation Ground that we hope will be put into action shortly.
* Completion of the extension and upstairs function room (IN PROGRESS).
* Refurbishment of the clubhouse/bar/toilets (DUE TO START).
