23/24 Pre-Season Friendly - Game 2
06/07/23 - Wombwell Town vs Pontefract Collieries
With the memory of the Sheffield FC draw still fresh in the memories there were hopes that a similar performance could be made against another NPL Eash outfit. These hopes were dashed in the first half however, as Rob Guilfoyle showed his qualities on 17 minutes to break the deadlock with an individual piece of skill. The forward received the ball from the left back, was allowed to turn two men before taking a touch inside and hitting his shot from outside the area and loop the ball over the trialist keeper. Two minutes later and Guilfoyle pounced to make double the lead. A short corner was fired in from the edge of the area and after his initial shot came back off the post it was a simple tap-in with the keeper scrambling. The striker made it 3-0 on 37 minutes when he took advantage of some very shaky defending from the Wellers. Brodie Cooper did all he could to stop the marauding midfielder going forward, only for the ball to ricochet off 'Trialist D', back onto the prone Colls midfielder and bounce to Guilfoyle who turned Alf Thompson with one touch and slotted the ball home with another. It wasn't all the visitors way though as new signing Callum Walton forced Lloyd Allinson into a full stretch save while the game was still goal less, and the Wellers had the last say of the opening 45 as a corner by Walton was half cleared to Gadhafi Kiwanuka outside the box and the Ugandan struck from distance with the final kick of the half. Half Time: WTFC 1, PCFC 3. Ponte Colls fielded a different side in the second 45 minutes, while the Wellers slowly introduced their subs as the minutes ticked by. It was a case of set-piece disaster for the Wellers as new Ponte signing Adam Haw netted from the penalty spot on 50 minutes before reacting quickly on 65 minutes to score his second after a free-kick from 22 yards struck the frame of the goal and fell nicely to the forward 3 yards from goal. The final goal of the came fell in favour of Wombwell Town with 22 minutes left of the game. Luke Micklethwaite played a ball inside to Cooper who decided not to play the one-two and instead went long to pick out trialist G. The wideman raced clear to the edge of the box and before he could be closed down tried his luck with a shot across goal, catching out Harry Flatters, as the ball dropped over his head into the far corner. A very different outcome to the first friendly, but lots of dissect and improve upon in the weeks ahead for the Wellers.
