23/24 Pre-Season Friendly - Game 3
11/07/23 - Wombwell Town vs Nostell MW Res
With two challenging friendlies now played, the Wellers were looking a chance to go out and impress against lower levelled opposition. A game against Nostell MW Reserves and Development game them that opportunity at the Recreation Ground in a game where the final score didn't do justice to the opposition. An even opening ten minutes then saw the home side take control of possession and dominate in the final third. It was no surprise when the opening goal came on 12 minutes when it looked as though the floodgates could open up from then on. Trialist C, playing centre back, has been up field for a corner and lurked on the edge of the area to receive the ball from new signing Harley Wilson from the left wing. The trialist had time to turn on the ball and place his shot around the diving keeper into the far bottom corner. Much to Nostell's credit the score remained 1-0 for another 20 minutes before Eddie Agnew was gifted with an easy finish from 8 yards. Gadhafi Kiwanuka was instrumental in the build-up and after his initial shot cannoned back off the base of the post, the ball fell nicely to the captain. Half Time: WTFC 2, NMWR 0. The usual flurry of changes came in the second half for both sides and it seemed to unsettle the rhythm of the play until Kiwanuka was involved once again in the build-up play for a third goal on 67 minutes. The playmaker, travelling down the middle of the pitch, was able to pick out Callum Walton in the box and the winger couldn't fail to strike his effort into the far corner. A late surge of attacks from Wombwell Town added three goals in the final eight minutes with Nostell's young players maybe losing a bit of confidence and composure. The first of three came on 82 minutes as Trialist F scored his second goal of pre-season as he was able to take a touch and fire low into the corner from Walton's set-up. Within 60 seconds Walton grabbed a second for himself as he showed off his fancy footwork to create space in the area for another shot across goal into the corner. A similar pattern was emerging in the final minute as another trialist, the youngest of all the players on the field we imagine, showed that size wasn't everything as he too beat the keeper at the left post to score across goal.
