23/24 Pre-Season Friendly - Game 5
22/07/23 - Dearne & District vs Wombwell Town
The final friendly ahead of the Wellers first NCEL game didn't go quite according to plan, but the team should learn some valuable lessons as a result. The opening 15 minutes were fairly even with Farbod Yousefi almost giving the visitors the lead with an effort across goal from the left wing. After beating the keeper the ball rolled across the wet surface and struck the base of the left hand post, and was cleared before Gareth McDermott could get onto the rebound. Dearne & District took the lead on 20 minutes with a move that exposed the Wellers down the their left hand side. The left back trialist was out-numbered and the ball cut back across the box was finished by Josh Moore. Two minutes later it was deja vu as Moore doubled the lead with an almost carbon copy of the first goal in a move that left manager Karl Rose scratching his head at how his team had conceded two goals with the same move twice. Wombwell Town got back into the game on 36 minutes as Brodie Cooper was played in on the right from deep to go 1-on-1 with the keeper. The midfielder waited for the keeper to advance before firing low, past the keeper into the far corner of the net. The comeback only last two minutes as a clumsy challenge from Jason Paling gave away a penalty, which Enzo Guarini scored by sending Jono Davis the wrong way. Half Time: DDFC 3, WTFC 1. It was a much better performance from the Wellers in the second half and on 60 minutes a good play down the right wing eventually saw Yousefi play a ball across the penalty area. Left deliberately by Gadhafi Kiwanuka, Cooper was on hand to curl his shot past the keeper. The next 20 minutes could have given the game a different outcome as two goals by Kiwanuka were dubiously disallowed for apparent offsides by the stand-in linesman (a Dearne & District coach). Despite the hopes of a comeback, with seven minutes remaining a rare second half attack by Dearne saw them score a fourth from a corner. Inevitably, it was volleyed in off the crossbar by form Wellers' marksman Luke Norbury.
