Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 15
13/10/23 - Nostell MW vs Wombwell Town
Friday night football saw the teams in third and first go head-to-head in a game that drew a crowd of 217. For the opening 20 minutes it was the visitors who had the edge and saw them take the lead after just ten minutes as Brad Kerr finished off a move that saw Gav Allott use his strength to outmuscle the defender and play in his strike partner. Kerr's initial effort was deflected towards goal by Kane Reece, but Kerr was alert enough to pounce when the ball was pushed back out from goal by keeper Rhys Westcarr Nostell started to show why they had had a good start to their season on 19 minutes when Jordan Kershaw and Liam Owen combined and forced a shot to be deflected over the bar. The home side had an effort cleared off the line by Wellers captain Rikki Paylor on 33 minutes as Joe Wood made a darting run down the right wing to get past Joe Egan and put his shot past Jono Davis who had narrowed the angle enough. Westcarr was called into action once more on 38 minutes as Owen Sykes' free-kick had to be palmed away to deny a second goal for the visitors. There could have been a late chance in the half as Reece was put through by Gadhafi Kiwanuka, however the referee pulled the game back for a free-kick instead of playing the advantage. Half Time: NMW 0, WTFC 1. The second half saw Nostell MW use their pace to good use and on 54 minutes a surge outside the box saw Joe Egan bring down the man and give the home side a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the area. Dangerous it proved to be as Davis made the initial save from the free-kick, and another from the follow-up shot before Carl Robinson finally put the ball into the net to equalise. Nostell took a deserved lead on 64 minutes as a counter attack from a throw saw another driven run by Wood to the edge of the area. Egan made the tackle this time, but the loose ball fell to Robinson who hit it first time and beat Davis, despite the keeper making some contact with the ball on its way in. Going behind lit a spark in the Wellers and just three minutes later Allott was played in by Eddie Agnew, but saw his shot go agonisingly across goal. Shortly after another Allott effort, this time from outside the area, was held by Westcarr. It was a little bit of history repeating itself on 79 minutes as the Wellers equaliser came, similarly to the one at Parkgate two weeks ago, as a free-kick by Jason Paling was punched by Westcarr to the feet of Paylor who smashed the ball in off the defender. There was late drama at both ends of the pitch as Callum Walton curled a shot from outside the box over the defence which caused Toft to make a diving save to push the ball onto the crossbar with three minutes remaining. A minute later and it was Davis' turn to save a point as he got down low to deny Kershaw on the line. In added time Owen Birks cleared off the line from another Kershaw effort as the ball got past Davis. Five minutes into added time a long clearance found Gareth McDermott through on goal, but for the second time the one-on-one opportunity was denied by the referees whistle - this one to signal the end of the game.
