Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 16
17/10/23 - Wombwell Town vs Retford United
In a tight game between two sides that had lost just once each in the league going into the contest it was the home side who had the early chances. An early free-kick by Callum Walton and the first corner of the game inside four minutes though both came to nothing in way of efforts on goal. The visitors then exerted a spell of pressure on the Wellers defence, however for the most part Jono Davis was largely untroubled and after 20 minutes the first real chance of the game fell to Eddie Agnew. The striker, back in the starting line-up for the first time since the 26th September, turned his marker on the edge of the area but shot over the crossbar. Retford keeper Thomas Crosby was called into action just before the half our as Brad Kerr raced onto a lovely long ball by Jason Paling down the right. The cross was flicked closer to goal by Agnew and forced the keeper to get down low and push the ball away. On the stroke of half time another Walton free-kick into the box was only half cleared. The ball was fired back in by Harley Wilson and after several deflections a header down by Agnew found Rikki Paylor whose volleyed effort was saved by Crosby for a corner. Half Time: WTFC 0, RUFC 0. Whereas the Wellers could argue they had the the better of the first half, Retford certainly took control in the second. A surging run through the middle of the pitch was laid off to Jimmy Eyles in the box, but Davis was able to come out and block the effort for a corner. Tensions were rising with a couple of bookings for both teams, and on 58 minutes a long throw into the box saw the Retford man shoot over and clipped by Brodie Cooper who pulled out of a blocked challenge. Retford players swarmed the referee in protest, but the man in the middle stood firm. However, just four minutes later the visitors were awarded a penalty. A slipped clearance by Owen Birks saw Eyles pass the ball through into the box to Lewis Macaskill who went down as Davis came out to deny the striker. Adam Chapman stepped up to take the penalty, but denied by Davis who stopped the ball down to his right and gathered before any chance of a rebound. The Wellers found themselves down to ten men on 71 minutes as Gadhafi Kiwanuka was shown a second yellow card. His first had been shown on 52 minutes when the creative man slipped and the Retford player went over him. An accumulation of fouls though saw him booked. The second yellow felt just as harsh as he lifted his leg and won the ball, only for shouts of high foot getting him into trouble once again. Miraculously the player who claimed to get the boot in the head got straight up after the red was shown. After several half efforts the visitors stung the palms of Davis's gloves against as Chapman fired from range on 75 minutes. The sustained pressure paid off just a minute later as a long ball to the left was passed back across goal to Macaskill who curled his shot past Davis. In the final minute Gareth McDermott came on to make his 100th appearance for the club, and almost had a chance to equalise, but couldn't get enough on the ball as he stretched at the right post in added time.
