Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 2
01/08/23 - Armthorpe Welfare vs Wombwell Town
After the massive opening day result at home to Yorkshire Amateur, manager Karl Rose was well aware the game at Armthorpe Welfare would be a different kind of battle. The Wellers came out with the same eagerness and tempo than in the opening day game and Joseph Dunn was called upon three times in the opening two minutes to deny Eddie Agnew and Brodie Cooper in the box before the attack ended with Alf Thompson's header was gathered on the line. It was long though before the keeper was beaten and on just minutes the visitors were in the lead as Gadhafi Kiwanuka netting in successive matches which a chipped effort over Dunn from outside the penalty area. If it wasn't for the covering Alf Thompson though the game could have been turned on its head just three minutes later as Owen Birks caught his attacker as he tried to break into the box. Without his defensive partner near it could well have been a straight red. On 17 minutes a Callum Walton free kick deep on the right hand side saw a scramble in the box as the crossbar was hit before a free-kick was awarded from Agnew's foul at the left hand post. The lead was doubled as Agnew found himself with little time to place his shot as Dunn came out to close down the angle on the striker as he received the ball from the right. The save was pushed wide on 38 minutes and cleared and a foul by Jordan Good saw the midfielder pick up the second yellow of the game for Wombwell Town. Two minutes before half time Walton raced onto a counter-attack ball from Armthorpe's corner, but the winger dragged his shot across the goal. Half Time: AWFC 0, WTFC 1. Five minutes after the restart it was the Wellers who found themselves on the attack once more and a quick move down the right saw Jed Rashid deliver a ball to Walton who could only find the body of Dunn with the shot who covered the ball well. Looking for goal number two started to become frustrating for the Wellers and they were denied again by the determined Armthorpe defence after Agnew broke clear on 58 minutes. The captain's pass to Kiwanuka was fired at goal only to ricochet to Walton whose effort was then blocked for a corner. The push for a second gave Armthorpe some belief, but it took until the 61st minute before they could register a serious effort on the Wellers goal. The shot from inside the area was pushed wide by keeper Jono Davis who had to get down to his left post quickly to keep his clean sheet in tact. The crossbar once again denied the Wellers as on 75 minutes Walton's corner from the left was played back across goal by Thompson to Cooper to set up his shot on the edge of the area, but rattled the frame of the goal. Frustrations became very apparent as the minutes ticked down as Armthorpe were reduced to ten with a man going in the sin bin for ten minutes, and as soon as he came back on the pitch it was Wellers substitute Matt Thornton who was put in the sin bin for what remained of added time. The Wellers looked to keep the ball out of their penalty area and with Cooper taking the ball into the Armthorpe corner it did enough to run down the clock and the referee blew before the home side could launch an attack from a throw in.
