Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 23
26/12/23 - Athersley Rec vs Wombwell Town
The first Boxing Day game in Wellers history start brightly as hosts Athersley Rec gave Brad Kerr an early gift just 90 seconds into the game. Keeper Ellis Pickard fumbled the ball as he came to collect and Kerr was sharp enough to fire home the loose ball for his sixth goal of the season. Chances for the remainder of the half came at a premium, but referee Matt Collins still had a few belated cards to give out with five yellow cards shown in the first 45 minutes, with three coming from one incident on 40 minutes which saw Gareth McDermott react to a late tackle on him and a brief scuffle ended handbags put away. Half Time: ARFC 0, WTFC 1. Athersley Rec kept Wombwell on their toes until the return of Callum Walton from injury as a substitute on 54 minutes sparked the game into life shortly after. A delay on 57 minutes as Rec waited to take a corner was caused by a lack of a key ingredient...a football. Two minutes later as one or two were retrieved from outside the ground saw the corner come to nothing, but one at the other end provided a second for the visitors. Won by Walton, the corner taken by Louis Wardle (who was making his first appearance in a third spell following a transfer earlier in December from Athersley Rec) and found Cory Woodward at the back post to head home for his first goal in Wellers colours. Wardle, a free-kick wizard, showed what he hopes to offer on 68 minutes as his dead ball from outside the box had to be pushed wide by Pickard to deny a third. On 71 minutes the long awaited debut for Jordan Kershaw finally came as he replaced Kerr. Kershaw signed on November 3rd from Nostell where he was top scorer, but has had to wait for his debut due to injury. Jordan Good lined up a shot on the edge of the area two minutes later but before he could strike the ball he was pushed to the ground from behind leaving fans to scream for a penalty, only for the referee to wave away the appeals. It didn't matter too much though as a third goal came on 79 minutes with substitutes combining to give Kane Reece his first goal since late September. Walton down the right had time to play the ball high across the face of goal finding Kershaw at the back post via a flick on by Rec keeper Pickard. Kershaw was able to play the ball back to Reece who was free to tuck the ball over the line from five yards. The final chance to add to their tally came deep into added time as Wardle's free-kick was once again denied by the diving efforts of Pickard and the full time whistle blew before the corner could be set up. The Wellers have made it six points from both games either side of Christmas and kept two clean sheets in the process, and will look to make it three wins in a row against Worsbrough Bridge on Saturday (kick off 1pm).
