Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 24
06/01/24 - Wombwell Town vs Retford FC
The start of 2024 gave the Wellers their first three points as they took to their opposition like one of the many storms we've had in recent months. Wombwell Town did well to get the game on considering the pitch was waterlogged with numerous large puddles the previous Tuesday, but some excellent work to the pitch made it playable. The hard work from the volunteers was rewarded just 52 seconds into the first half as Jordan Kershaw - on his first start for the club - found the back of the net before some fans had taken to their seat. Louis Wardle's free kick was taken from deep and put into the penalty area where a Retford player's header put the ball directly into the path of Kershaw who side footed his shot past Ethan Cowan in goal. Gareth McDermott's throw from the left instigated the start of the second goal just 15 minutes later. The throw found Callum Walton who delivered a ball into the box for Kane Reece to flick on to Gadhafi Kiwanuka. The scheming playmaker was able to twist his body and play the ball back to Reece who pounced on the chance to score in back-to-back matches. Kershaw could have had another with two chances within four minutes with the first coming on 21 minutes. Build-up play between Paling and Kiwanuka finally saw Jordan Good play in Kershaw who shot wide. Four minutes later Kiwanuka slotted the ball through the middle of the centre backs for Kershaw to run onto, but a good save by Cowan deflected the ball out for a corner. A third goal came on 31 minutes with the usual suspects involved once more. Kershaw's effort from the left of the penalty area was kicked up into the air by Cowan and fell for Kiwanuka who headed towards goal. Reece was there once again to deflect the ball past the stranded keeper, with Jack Johnson playing everyone onside. The final chance of the half came with ten minutes to go as Kiwanuka provided for Wardle this time, only for the midfielders effort to go wide from distance. Half Time: WTFC 3, RFC 0. The second half was a much quieter affair with Walton setting up Good at the edge of the penalty area only for the shot to go over the bar after the midfielder was man-handled from behind. There were large penalty appeals on 67 minutes as McDermott broke free down the left wing and played the ball across for Reece. As the ball came Haydn Goddard clearly brought down Reece only for the referee to wave the appeals away. In typical fashion a similar challenge just ten minutes later at the other end gave Retford a penalty and a red card to Joe Egan. The long ball over the top found Liam Frost who was bundled down from behind by Egan and the referee sent off the defender and awarded the penalty, which was finally dispatched by Frost three minutes later. Substitute Eddie Agnew could have ended any last minute nerves of a comeback with a minute to go, but after receiving a free-kick by Jono Davis inside the area Agnew struck over the bar. Wombwell Town - 3 Jordan Kershaw 1 Kane Reece 16, 31 Retford FC - 1 Liam Frost 80 (p) Attendance: 167
