Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 26
20/01/24 - Wombwell Town vs Swallownest
Looking to continue on their goal scoring form from the previous week, the Wellers went into this game knowing it was a very different Swallownest side to the one that made life difficult at the Swall Siro earlier in the season. The match was a good contest with both sides trying to find a way through to goal, but the first meaningful effort produced a goal on 19 minutes. A long throw by Owen Sykes on the right hand side was flicked up in the penalty area by Eddie Agnew and found captain Rikki Paylor who redirected the ball with his head past keeper Tom Kirkland at the far post. A second was almost added three minutes later as another throw from the opposite side as the ball was flicked on by Harley Wilson and took a deflection that forced Kirkland to get down low and tip wide. Swallownest came close to equalising from a corner on 26 minutes. The initial corner was returned to the taker by debutante Ethan Fretwell and put back across goal for Fretwell to head towards goal. Jono Davis did well to get a fist on the ball and Paylor was on hand to head over his own crossbar. The equaliser did arrive for the visitors on 33 minutes however as long ball down the right wing in front of the dugouts found Francis Finneran able to break past Cory Woodward who had to turn and beat Davis down low from close range. Parity didn't last long though as the Wellers took kick off and a ball forward by Sykes from left back eventually found Jordan Kershaw who passed to Wilson. The midfielders vision found Anthony Mackie on the edge of the box and the winger placed the ball over the keeper and into the net off the crossbar to score his first goal for the club. The final action of the half provided Eddie Agnew with his first goal of the afternoon as he beat two defenders to reach a ball into the box by Kershaw, which was followed by a neat first touch finish past the keeper his right hand post. Half Time: WTFC 3, SFC 1. In the second half Swallownest couldn't seem to muster any energy to really threaten the Wellers goal in the early stages and it was the home side's debutante, Danny Youel, who almost extended the lead just before the hour mark, but Kirkland made another save. With the new floodlights on and "oohs" from the regulars heard from across the pitch as they were dazzled by the brightness it marked a key moment for the club who have worked hard for almost two years to get them installed. Swallownest almost scrambled a goal back on 74 minutes as a free kick bounced in front of Davis forcing the keeper to stop the ball with his legs, the follow up was then saved again by the keeper's legs. Five minutes later Jordan Good was ready to replace Agnew, however it was quickly spotted that previous sub Brad Kerr came on with the wrong number and Good would have meant there were two 14s on the pitch. With the delay in the sub while the number 15 was grabbed from the changing room Agnew set up Kerr who touched it for Callum Walton only for his effort to be blocked and fall back to Agnew who scored into the bottom corner. A minute later Agnew was replaced. With seven minutes remaining Swallownest sub Jamal Shinelle tried his luck from range and struck the crossbar and over in what was the final big chance of the game for either side. Wombwell Town - 4 Rikki Paylor 19 Anthony Mackie 34 Eddie Agnew 45+1, 79 Swallownest - 1 Francis Finneran 33 Attendance: 204
