Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 33
06/03/24 - Yorkshire Amateur vs Wombwell Town
Wombwell Town travelled to the side they put to the sword on the opening day of the NCEL season looking for a first away win since late January. Only six of of the opening day 16 were present for the Wellers, while Yorkshire Amateur had just two members of the squad present from those who lost 6-0 back in late July. Not many would have expected a similar score to the game at the back end of last summer and the first half proved that the result could have gone in either team's favour. It was a quiet start to the game, but on 15 minutes Jono Davis (back in goal replacing Henry Kendrick who dropped to the bench) made the first save of note to deny the hosts. A minute later and new Wellers signing Rhys Plater almost had a dream start when his connection from Jason Paling's initial volley was stopped by the slightest of touches by Ammers keeper Jack Viles. The Wellers came close again on 26 minutes as Louis Wardle saw back-to-back efforts first blocked and then deflected wide for a corner. The corner by Craig Nelthorpe headed on by Eddie Agnew, but his effort was cleared off the line. A final chance of the half also fell to the visitors as Nelthorpe was denied via a freekick with another follow-up effort deflected wide of the target. Half time: YAFC 0, WTFC 0 Any hopes that Yorkshire Amateur had of exacting that opening day defeat disappeared very quickly in the second half and two quick goals changed the atmosphere on the pitch. It took just a minute for a long clearance by Davis found Jordan Kershaw on the edge of the penalty area. Initial shot saved by Viles the striker reclaimed the ball on the edge of the box and squared towards the penalty box where Agnew was running up and smashed the ball into the net. Not two minutes later a mix-up at the back gifted Agnew with a second as he found the keeper's bottom right corner with a low drive across goal from 8 yards. Ammers went down to ten-men on 55 minutes when a two-footed challenge on Wardle saw Freddie Swales shown a straight card. Agnew completed his first hat-trick of the season when he headed home a corner on 63 minutes as Wombwell took full control of the game. WIth a quarter of an hour to go a second yellow card for Ethan Kachosa saw the home side down to nine-men. This allowed 16-year old James Smith to come on with eight minutes remaining to have a taste of NCEL football for the first time. But it was another substitute, Gadhafi Kiwanuka, who grabbed the team's fourth goal with five minutes remaining. Keeper Viles had gone walk-about and the poor clearance found Kiwanuka who struck the ball first time and find the back of the net from just inside the Ammers half. Surprisingly it was Kiwanuka's first goal since 23rd September! The last time two substitutes scored for the Wellers in a game was in the opening day game against the same opponents, and history struck again four minutes into added time as the marauding left back Gareth McDermott carried the ball all the way forward and curled home the ball on the rebound. Not many would have predicted the final score when things were level at half time, but the result keeps the Wellers in contention for the play-offs with a big game on Saturday at Retford United, who are just one place and one point above. Yorkshire Amateur - 0 Wombwell Town - 5 Eddie Agnew 47, 48, 63 Gadhafi Kiwanuka 85 Gareth McDermott 90+4 Attendance: 40
