WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 34
09/03/24 - Retford United vs Wombwell Town

The lack of goals in this game showed that both defences were on top for the game that pitted fifth placed Retford United against 6th placed Wombwell Town.

Around the ground you could feel a sense of tension with both sides not wanting to lose, and on the pitch, particularly in the opening half hour, both sides were sizing each other up without really threatening the goalkeepers.

The home side had the best chances of the first half with a free kick deflected wide of the target by the wall and Jake Champion denied by Jono Davis in added time at the near post.

Craig Nelthorpe had the best chance for the Wellers as he fired over the crossbar seven minutes before the break.

With the wind still taking effect, much like it did in the first half, both teams threw a certain amount of caution towards it, but chances were created by both sides who looked for a winner.

Nelthorpe had his second chance of the game just two minutes into the second half as he received the ball to his feet following his own free kick, but the strike could only find the side netting.

The Wellers defence was thankful of a skewed effort by Liam Owen on 57 minutes after the striker was put through 1-on-1 with Davis closing down the angle enough.

From the resulting goal kick Jordan Kershaw found himself able to unleash a shot and force a save from Davis' counterpart Daniel Haystead. The game had suddenly burst to life and a minute later Davis made another save to keep the score level.

Possibly the save of the afternoon came on 70 minutes as a ball in from the left somehow found Badgers captain Adam Chapman free in the box, but his strike from eight yards out was batted away by Davis from point blank.

Both Owen Fieldsend and sub Josh Nodder had efforts wide and saved before one last chance fell to Wombwell Town deep in added time when the cross from Danny Youel was headed by Cory Woodward - in the opponent's box following a corner - but found the arms of Haystead to deny a late snatch and grab.
