Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 35
16/03/24 - Wombwell Town vs Staveley MW
With games running short dropping points at this stage would do more harm than good for play-off chasing Wombwell Town, however a draw against Staveley was seen as a good outcome - and a rather lucky one! The Wellers had to come from behind twice in a game they struggled to get going in from the kick off. Poor passing and second to the ball on most occasions it was a frustrating performance and one Staveley capitalised on with better ability on the ball and read of the game. The visitors took the lead on 18 minutes as a move down the right wing wasn't closed down enough and the resulting cross into the penalty area found James Gregory unmarked at the back post and able to curl his effort past keeper Jono Davis who stood no chance. In true Wombwell fashion they didn't stay behind for long and a corner on 23 minutes produced the equaliser. The initial corner saw a scramble in the box with several efforts blocked before the ball fell to Kane Reece at the keeper's left hand post who put the ball into the opposite corner of the net. Danny Youel almost scored his first goal in a Wellers shirt just six minutes later as his volley from another corner was pushed to safety by Staveley keeper Billy Parker. WTFC 1, SMWFC 1. The second half started brightly for the hosts as Jordan Kershaw and Reece both put efforts wide of the post, but the proverbial stuffing was knocked out of them just five minutes into the half. A corner from the right found the free head of Jack Allerton at the far post and the centre back scored his first Staveley goal of the season. As the game continued Staveley contained Wombwell without really creating too many more chances, but denied their opponents from creating much as well. Another scramble on 66 minutes in the Staveley penalty area couldn't result in a chance on goal and Joe Egan headed wide of the mark with 15 minutes to go as it looked as though Staveley would hold on for all three points. A point was rescued at the death as, four minutes into added time, Kershaw was able to shrug off a challenge in the penalty area and release a shot from a narrow angle. The ball might have gone in, but the unfortunate deflection from the defender made sure the ball hit the back of the net. Wombwell Town - 2 Kane Reece 23 Jordan Kershaw 90+4 Staveley MW - 2 James Gregory 18 Jack Allerton 50 Attendance: 115
