Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 38
02/04/24 - Wombwell Town vs Beverley Town
Coming into the game with back-to-back defeats and the first against the same opponents as this encounter, Wombwell Town were a team determined to turn their form around going into the final month of the season. The game also marked the 100th appearance of popular keeper Jono Davis who joined the club in early 2000. It was fitting that Davis was involved in the opening goal of the game, and the only effort to find the back of the net in the first half. The keeper's launch upfield fell kindly to the unmarked Rhys Plater who used his composure and balance to wait for the onrushing Tom Nicholson to reach him before chipping the ball over the keeper's head and into the net to give the Wellers an 11th minute lead. Half Time: WTFC 1, BTFC 0. A minute into the second half Davis was called upon for the first time and denied a goal by a the smallest of touches to deflected a shot onto the crossbar, which bounced down towards the line and smothered before it could cross. A flurry of bookings for the visitors started to show their frustrations creeping in and they grew even further on 58 minutes as Plater netted for the second time in the game. A ball in from the right was flicked on by the advanced Rikki Paylor and found the winger inside area ready to pounce. His shot beat Nicholson and pinged off the base of the post before spinning into the back of the net. With a quarter of an hour remaining things boiled over for Beverley as they saw not one, but two players sent to the showers early in the same incident. Substitute Eddie Agnew was put through on goal and after checking his run was onside found himself taken down from behind by Kai Larkin a yard before the penalty area. Referee Ben Brighton had no choice but to show a red card. However this decision, fueled by the lack of offside flag Beverley clearly felt should have been raised, got the experienced Nathan Hotte hot under the collar and he was initially showed a yellow and sent to the sin bin. Hotte hadn't finished though and further choice words for the referee and he too was shown a straight red, leaving Beverley with nine men. Another foul on the edge of the area on 78 minutes saw another yellow card for Beverley, and from the resulting free kick Owen Sykes hit the back of the net with power for his first goal in a Wellers shirt! Despite a few more sporadic attacks Wombwell were happy to sit on their three goal lead and protect the clean sheet, giving Davis his 39th in his 100th appearance. Wombwell Town - 3 Rhys Plater 11, 58 Owen Sykes 78 Beverley Town - 0 Attendance: 204
