Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 39
06/04/24 - Dronfield Town vs Wombwell Town
The Wellers still haven't given up hope of sneaking into the play-offs, but they know they must win all remaining games to stand a chance. Against a side who beat them on home soil just before Christmas, Wombwell Town knew they would face a tough test against a Dronfield side looking to secure a top ten finish and went into the day in 9th. The visitors had the better of the first half opportunities, although a double deflection from two Dronfield players almost saw an own goal as the ball ricocheted and hit the post before falling kindly for the keeper to pounce. The breakthrough came on the half hour as Rhys Plater battled for the ball outside the area and played Jordan Kershaw into the box and the striker ended a goal drought by finding the back of the net. DTFC 0, WTFC 1. Dronfield showed their determination in a quickfire spell starting on 56 minutes as top scorer Max Rhodes netted from a corner to equalise. The marksman didn't wait long before grabbing his 30th of the season and two minutes later gave his team the lead as turned on the ball in the box following a cross on the right and beat Davis at the right hand post. In truth the game felt a little flat for the next ten minutes, but as the Wellers determination grew so did the chances for the visitors. Plater found himself free on the left side of the penalty box on 71 minutes, but was denied by the save of Lewis Naylor. Fans were left scratching their heads with eight minutes to go as a quick Owen Sykes thrown down the left saw Plater and Kershaw combine for a one-two for the former to see his close range shot somehow deflected over the bar and out of the ground by Naylor. Dronfield's Callum Riley was sent to the sin bin with three minutes remaining after his frustrations showed too much when a throw-in was given by the referee to Wombwell, rather than giving his assistant's decision. From the throw Eddie Agnew's touch looked to be going in before Rikki Paylor forced the ball over the line, and as a result the defender was given offside in a close-call. The pressure paid off and an equaliser came a minute into added time as a scramble in the box was put into the net - claimed by Eddie Agnew. Wombwell kept looking for a winner and after Agnew was clattered to the ground on the edge of the area to more frustrations from the home side that saw another booking. On Tuesday Sykes scored his first goal for the club from a free-kick and everyone knew what to expect as the left back picked his spot again. Whipping the ball around the wall, Sykes found the bottom left corner and gave the keeper no chance. More chaos ensued over the decision and as the Wellers celebrated the goal another Dronfield player was told to leave the field and manager Chris Millington received a second yellow from the sideline to end the game. Dronfield Town - 2 Max Rhodes 56, 58 Wombwell Town - 3 Jordan Kershaw 30 Eddie Agnew 90+1 Owen Sykes 90+4 Attendance: 135
