Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 40
13/04/24 - Wombwell Town vs Harrogate Railway Athletic
In a game where the score looks one-sided, visitors Harrogate Railway will be ruing missed opportunities. There was an early blow for the Wellers on eight minutes when striker Jordan Kershaw was clattered into by Harrogate keeper Josh Sharkey and after four minutes of treatment the marksman was substituted as a precaution for concussion. Morgan James marked his debut with a harsh yellow card on 18 minutes after he won the ball in a tackle that on any other day would have been applauded. The breakthrough came on 20 minutes as a throw by Jason Paling found its way into the box and flicked on by the head of Eddie Agnew onto the head of captain Rikki Paylor who found the net for his ninth goal in 31 appearances. Just three minutes later Agnew was fouled by Hakkinen Anani and up stepped Owen Sykes who scored his third direct free-kick in three matches to double to the lead. The dangerman for Harrogate throughout the game was Luca Bolino, who scored against the Wellers in the reverse fixture in a 3-0 home win back in November, and the winger forced a same from Jono Davis on the 34th minute that only an excellent save could stop. Four minutes later and Davis was beaten as he advanced on the striker coming into the box, but Sykes was racing towards and line and cleared with a yard to spare to deny the visitors. A late penalty call could have changed the momentum of the game as Bolino went down in search after Joe Egan brilliantly stuck his foot out in front to win the ball and not make any contact with the Harrogate player. WTFC 2, HRA 0. James was replaced at half time by Gadhafi Kiwanuka to add a bit more fire power to the team and the sub added a third just nine minutes into the half. The attacking midfielder raced after the ball in the area and beat keeper Sharkey to move past the half diving keeper and slot into the empty net. Sadly for Kiwanuka, another race into the box ten minutes later saw the keeper collect and the Wellers' man twist his groin - ending his brief cameo for the afternoon. The points were secured with just under a quarter of an hour remaining as Rhys Plater was put through on goal and made no mistake in making it four nil. It was almost five on 83 minutes as Plater found himself free to shoot once more, only to hit the base of the right hand post. The continuing attack ended with Craig Nelthorpe's shot deflecting over the frame of the goal. At the other end there were half chances for the visitors, but they were thwarted at every opportunity by Davis, Paylor and co who were determined to keep a 14th clean sheet of the season (Davis' 13th).
