16/04/24 - Wombwell Town vs Worsbrough Bridge Athletic
The Wellers are finishing the season with some strong performances and after putting four past their opponents the previous Saturday, they looked for a similar result against Worsbrough Bridge in the local derby. In the reverse fixture the Wellers were lucky to take the points in a 4-3 victory, however this encounter saw the home side take control early on. Charlie Preston, the Worsbrough keeper, had played against the Wellers for Ollerton Town and impressed so much the club made an approach for him, however the move wasn't followed up and the youngster joined Bridge instead. Preston denied Town on many occasions throughout the game, starting on nine minutes when Jason Paling's ball was flicked onto Eddie Agnew who crossed to find Morgan James whose shot was pushed wide. Another save came two minutes later, but the keeper could nothing to stop the ball finding the net on 17 minutes. A superb pass by Craig Nelthorpe in the middle of the pitch found Rhys Plater free on the right wing. After a couple of touches a perfect cross found Agnew at the far post and was free to volley in the club's 100th league goal of the season and his 15th. Just five minutes later the lead was doubled after Juninho Blake fouled James just inside the Worsbrough half and received the first yellow card of the game. After quick treatment given, the free kick was floated into the box where blocked shots from Plater and Josh Lindley eventually saw the ball hit into the bottom corner by James for his first for the club. Worsbrough's best chance of the game came on 28 minutes as a free kick from the left wing was headed onto the crossbar and cleared away. Plater had a great opportunity to make it 3-0 on 37 minutes after receiving the ball from Owen Sykes down the left, but was once against thwarted by Preston. The final action of the first half did see the third goal go in with Sykes involved once again. The left back's cross found Agnew who set-up Jordan Kershaw on the edge of the box whose driven effort was too powerful for Preston this time. WTFC 3, WBAFC 0. The visitors gave it their all at the start of the season half, however it was the Wellers who had the chance to extend their lead ten minutes in. Kershaw was fouled in the penalty area by Dempsey Smith and was awarded a penalty. In the game against Ollerton where Preston played he saved a second half Kershaw penalty with a save to his left...on this occasion he saved the penalty from Kershaw again - this time with a save to his right! The keeper denied the Wellers once against on 65 minutes as Kershaw and Agnew combined, but were rebuffed with the shot once more. A fourth goal finally came with just over a quarter of a hour remaining as a delivery from the right by James found Agnew highest of all and able to head in his second of the game. There was to be no hat-trick for the club's joint top goal scorer this season as he was replaced in the final five minutes for 16 year old James Smith, making his third cameo appearance since his birthday. A final cherry on top of the cake was placed on 90 minutes as Plater's cross from the right found sub Danny Youel's shot from point blank range was deflected into the net off Preston and a Worsbrough defender to give the midfielder his first goal for the club.
