Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 42
25/04/24 - Wombwell Town vs Parkgate
With Wombwell now out of contention for the play-offs and visitors Parkgate needing three points to win the NCEL Division One title it was no surprise which team had the more urgency in this one. The Wellers expect to be awarded the three points from their remaining home game, against Nostell, after they couldn't field a team last Friday, which meant this could very well be the last home match of the season, but maybe not the last at the Recreation Ground! Clay Cross are the hosts for the final game of the season on May Bank Holiday Monday, however with their pitch issues continuing there could be a chance we'll play 'away' at our own ground. Back to this fixture though and the game saw Parkgate press forward without having too much joy in front of the large 319 strong crowd. It took until the 37th minutes for a moment of magic to break the deadlock, courtesy of Parkgate's Jack Haslam. The number 11 nut-megged his defender before curling an effort into the far corner that no keeper would be able to save. Just as half time was approaching, Silas Valladolid-Collins broke through the defence only to be met by the on-rushing Jono Davis. With the ball out of the forward's reach, Valladolid-Collins tried to win a free-kick or penalty (it was on the edge of the box) by theatrically going over the leg of the keeper - and was booked for simulation as a result. WTFC 0, PFC 1. The second half saw pressure from the hosts at the beginning with Eddie Agnew pressing a little too much. Having been booked in the first half the striker came close to being shown a second after a hefty challenge in front of the assistant referee, who, thankfully for Agnew, said he got a touch on the ball first. With chances at a premium the best effort for the Wellers came on 55 minutes as captain Rikki Paylor headed an effort just wide of the left hand post. Parkgate then had a moment of good fortune that all champions need once in a while as top scorer Ross Duggan was able to steal the ball in the Wombwell half and doubled the lead into an empty net on the hour mark. The final 12 minutes saw what could be a final appearance (on home soil anyway) for Gareth McDermott in a Wellers shirt. The club's all-time appearance holder feels his legs have finally gone and plans to hang up his boots. Having driven up from work in London just to make his final appearance, Macca deserves recognition for his cameo. Congratulations, and thank you for your great performances with the club. After five minutes of added time the final whistle blew and Parkgate celebrated as they should, in style, in the centre circle with the chants of "championees" heard all the way to Parkgate...maybe. Congratulations to them. Wombwell Town - 0 Parkgate - 2 Jack Haslam 37 Ross Duggan 60 Attendance: 319
