Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 5
19/08/23 - Retford FC vs Wombwell Town
The visit to Retford FC's The Rail Ground proved to be another new challenge for the Wellers as they faced the final quarter of the game with ten men. Owen Birks almost gave the visitors the lead in the second minute following Callum Walton's free kick which was headed towards goal by the defender only to see his effort cannon off the post. On 17 minutes debut man Kane Reece, signed overnight from Armthorpe Welfare, gave a glimpse of what he can do to the band of Town supporters when he forced a save from Jake Sykes. Another effort from Reece was headed wide of the target five minutes later after Walton provided the cross from the left. There was a sigh of relief as Retford FC broke forward, but the onrushing presence of Jono Davis saw the keeper take a touch of the ball before the man in blue went down, and referee Michael Wright waved the appeal away. Half Time: RFC 0, WTFC 0.. An improved Wellers performance in the second half is becoming a regular thing, and it was no different in this game as the team in red won a corner on 51 minutes. Walton's corner was delivered just past the near post and met by Alf Thompson who directed the ball with his header to the back post to score only his second goal for Wombwell Town. Matthew Thornton replaced Eddie Agnew on 54 minutes and provided the ball through that doubled the lead just two minutes later. Running down the right after a header forward by Gadhafi Kiwanuka, the striker found Walton in the penalty area with a squared ball and the man who scored two last Tuesday made no mistake with a first time finish. Then came potential disaster. Brodie Cooper picked up a yellow on 66 minutes and just a minute later a loose pass by Walton saw the midfielder try to win the ball, but catch his man and was not given another chance. A second yellow put the Wellers down to men men. on 70 minutes there were huge calls for a card on the half way line as Thornton was hauled to the ground off the ball, but complaints fell on deaf ears and in the end Town manager Karl Rose was shown a yellow instead. Despite being a man down, it was the Wellers who kept up the pressure and Thornton was in an ideal position to make it three nil on 73 minutes when he won the ball from the Retford keeper's feet, but took an extra touch instead of firing into the empty net and a Retford man got back in time to block the shot for a corner. There wasn't much for Jono Davis to do in the Wombwell net throughout the game, but he did make one notable save on 83 minutes as he pushed the ball wide for sub Jed Rashid to clear. The result means from five games the Wellers have won four, kept three clean sheets and can look back at a good start to life in the NCEL.
