Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 8
08/09/23 - Wombwell Town vs Athersley Recreation
A local derby, a big crowd - the biggest recorded attendance at the Recreation Ground for Town - and a performance from the Wellers to show why they are currently leading the way in the NCEL Division One. Despite an early yellow card for Owen Birks, the free kick for Rec was taken comfortably in the air by keeper Jono Davis. His launched kick upfield found Gavin Allott who put the ball inside for Eddie Agnew who ran into the box only to be bundled down from behind by Rec captain Charlie Auty for a penalty. In just his third appearance Gavin Allott has made a name for himself, showing exactly why he was signed by The Wellers and from the penalty spot he made no mistake to give the home side the lead on just seven minutes. Before the second goal came Rec had their best chance of the game as Danile Mossolo's low show from a narrow angle inside the box and blocked by the legs of Davis. Ellis Pickard denied Agnew on 33 minutes after the captain was put through into the box once more - this time by Gadhafi Kiwanuka - after the parried save Pickard's defence headed out for a corner. Just two minutes later Wombwell Town doubled their lead with a well worked piece that started on the right with through in by Jason Paling. Finding Kiwanuka the midfielder played it back to Paling who crossed into the box was collected by Allott at the far edge. The striker's pass to Callum Walton on the edge of the area gave the winger enough time to set himself up by beating his marker and firing his shot over Pickard, into the net. A bizarre moment by Pickard on 41 minutes gave the Wellers another corner. Birks long ball forward, which seemed more like a clearance than a shot, bounced by the penalty spot and height of the bounce forced Pickard to tip over, rather make the routine catch everyone expected. Half Time: WTFC 2, ARFC 0. Any hopes of an early goal for Athersley Rec were quickly obliterated just two minutes into the second half as Paling's deep cross from the right was handled in the area. Allott stepped up and made no mistake again, despite Pickard diving the right way. The game quickly became 4-0 on 52 minutes as Kiwanuka played in Allott down the left. The striker's pass to Walton was reciprocated with the marksman now in the box, He turned Ben Stobard and Ricky Berry before slotting home for the hat-trick and his seventh goal in just three games. Athersley Rec were awarded a penalty two minutes into added time, and from the video replay (highlights on our YouTube Channel) it looks as though the Rec player fell over the ball with no-one near him. No wonder Jason Paling went to the ref. He was then sin binned for point his finger at the referee. Veteran Lee Garside stepped up to take the spot kick and scored a consolation goal for the visitors, but it was too little, too late. The final chance of the game came five minutes into added time as Wellers substitute Brad Kerr latched onto a long ball by Davis, only to see his first time shot hit the base of the post and go out for a goal kick.
