JCP Construction NCEL League Cup - Round Three
09/01/24 - Wombwell Town vs Parkgate FC
The Wellers bowed out of the League Cup in a close game against Parkgate at the Recreation Ground. An even first 45 with very few chances saw Parkgate sneak into the lead a minutes before half time when substitute Owen Sykes' clearance hit Cian Guest and rebounded to a team mate. The pass back to the former Armthorpe player saw Guest free on the right hand side of the area and slot the ball into the far corner past Davis. Half Time: WTFC 0, PFC 1. The Wellers stepped up a gear in the second half and came close on a number of occasions before finding the equaliser. Eddie Agnew struck the post following a Sykes throw into the area from the left and Callum Walton finished off a great move that saw Sykes switch play to Jason Paling, before his cross was deflected to Callum Walton who took a touch and then struck the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area. On 72 minutes, Jordan Good equalised with a well taken finish in front of goal. Sykes was involved again as he played a low ball into the box which Good collected and touched to the keeper's right hand post before his left footed shot hit the roof of the net. Supporters were left fuming on 87 minutes when a cross from Paling brushed the arm of the leaning Parkgate defender and as the penalty appeals were waved away Gadhafi Kiwanuka went to shoot, only to be beaten to the ball and received a second yellow for his efforts. In the dying seconds Parkgate pushed forward and inevitably it was Sykes involved once again. As he stood to block the Parkgate player going for the ball the player cleverly in fell before contact was made and won a penalty. Substitute Jamie Austin scored the penalty four minutes into added time to leave everyone flabbergasted.
