Toolstation NCEL Division One - Game 18
24/10/23 - Rossington Main vs Wombwell Town
Wombwell Town bowed out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup at the first hurdle after coming up against NCEL Premier Division side Rossington Main. The difficult tie was made all the trickier with 13 players from the squad unavailable for a number of reasons, the biggest being injury! However, the Wellers put in a good account of themselves despite being under pressure for a lot of the game. Rossington’s early pressure didn’t produce any goals, however their best effort came on 13 minutes as Cameron Hough’s header struck the post from a corner. Two minutes later Town had their first effort on goal as Luke Micklethwaite, starting his first game of the season, curled an effort with the outside of his foot into the arms of Jim Pollard. The breakthrough came on 32 minutes as Gareth McDermott, ever-present but starting just his second game of the campaign, pounced on a loose ball across the back, took a touch and sailed the ball over Pollard into the top corner for his first goal since May 2022. The lead was almost doubled in the final seconds of the half as Callum Walton’s free-kick on the left wing was deflected inside the penalty box towards goal. The ball hit two thirds of the frame before bouncing down onto the line and cleared. RMFC 0, WTFC 1. A triple change at half time made a difference for the home side who immediately went on the attack. It paid off just five minutes into the half when referee Matt Rose pointed to the spot for a dubious penalty. No-one appealed or seemed to know why a penalty was given, but Ross Hannah stepped up and sent Jono Davis the wrong way to level the tie. Another sub in Manasse Kianga gave Rossington the lead on 66 minutes as his driving run down the left couldn’t be caught and a sweeping effort across goal beat Davis. A fairer reflection of the game could have been secured with two minutes to go as Kianga found himself through on goal once more, only to be denied by the fingertips of Davis. On reflection losing by a single goal against a team in a higher division, with a depleted squad, was a valiant effort and the side now look to focus on the league and league cup. Rossington Main - 2 Ross Hannah 50 Manasse Kianga 66 Wombwell Town - 1 Gareth McDermott 32 Attendance: 71
